Program Mentor

Wendell Scott, Jr.

Wendell Scott, Jr.Wendell Scott, Jr., son of Wendell Scott - the only African-American to win a race in NASCAR's elite division, has served as the program mentor for the Drive for Diversity program since its inception in 2004. As program mentor, Scott is able to use his vast racing knowledge to help develop young minority and female drivers. His responsiblities include driver recruitment, assessment, and coaching.

It is no surprise that Scott has proven to be an integral part of the Drive for Diversity program over the past four seasons. He has been exposed to auto racing and mechanics his entire life.

After graduating high school, Scott became the first black student to enroll in Danville Technical Institute, where he studied auto mechanics. Scott also served as a mechanic specialist with the U.S. Army at a missile site in Germany during the Vietnam War.

Following his military service, Scott went to the University of Florida to continue his education. He spent four years teaching auto mechanics and English at Central Florida Junior College before returning home to Virginia to work as his father's crew chief.

Today, Scott resides in his hometown of Danville, Va., and travels to Late Model and NASCAR Camping World Series races across the United States.

Scott was recently honored for his "Prestigious & Historical Contributions to the non-urban sport of NASCAR" in a ceremony held at the White House National Press Club. Click here to see photos from the event.
